  2. Jay Chou is making a high-flown comeback with his new album. Not surprisingly, his name is once again trending on all platforms. Diehard fans, full of nostalgia, are singing praise to their childhood-and-teen idol and creating discussions all over the place.

However, I'm not excited in the least by the hype. Mind you, I'm not going to play devil's advocate here. Jay Chou's remarkable talent is indisputable. He played a very important role in my teenage life and I can still sing most of his songs down pat. His new piece, Greatest Works of Art, not at his best, is still a solid lead track, though.

I am somewhat disappointed by the fact that he has not yet fully utilized his talent to its fullest potential. It is long past the time when he needed to crank out music to prove himself. I mean, with all the recognition, fortune and fame pocketed, he can venture into a more meaningful stage of his life. (I'm not talking about family life here, though I think family life is meaningful too and I highly appreciate Jay putting his family and friends over his job.)

My point is he could have had a greater impact on the upcoming generations of musicians with his ginormous fan base and clout in the industry, as another contemporary icon, David Tao, has been doing.

David is constantly sharing his ideas of music productions on social media platforms. I don't know all the music theories and stuff, but I enjoy watching all those videos where he explained how he created the iconic songs with meticulous planning and told the behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

Jay did something like that a couple of years ago at a Golden Melody Award event, showing a crowd of college students how easy it was to write a song like 青花瓷。He also mentored hopefuls on The Voice of China. But considering his considerable popularity, such influences are not enough, TBH.

Some of you might be like, "Who do you think you are to give Jay Chou a piece of your mind? Well, in light of the current state of the Chinese pop music industry, which is facing significant challenges and lacks notable musical talent and iconic figures, it is regrettable that a prominent individual like Jay has not fully utilized his potential to spearhead advancements in the industry and nurture emerging talents.

Another reason why I felt a strong urge to write this piece is that David, who is my all-time favorite, didn't receive his due. He and Jay are on the same level in terms of musical talent(from an amateur POV), but Jay has a much larger fan base. The discrepancy is just not fair.

I bet some would again jump on me and say David can't hold a candle to Jay. "He is a douche bag who cheated on his wife." I saw similar hateful comments here and there by people who never liked or only listened to a handful of his music. Well, number one, using "douche bag" or 渣男 to define a person is oversimplified and irresponsible. It erases all the other good qualities that constitute a human being. Number two, this is a common ad hominem argument. David's declined popularity has little to do with his love affairs, but more with the fact that he's less prolific and cares less about the market reactions compared to Jay.

I won't bother to explain why I will always pick David over Jay. He didn't earn the name of "Godfather of R&B" (let's say in the Chinese music circle) for nothing. And I don't think this title does him justice. He has worked a wide range of music styles into his works: blues, hip-hop, funk, rock, 2-step, jazz, acid jazz, ballad, country, gospel, electronic music, you name it. Many works were made more than two decades ago and still shine today. But sadly, the song that comes off the top of most people's heads is 今天你要嫁给我, even though the song is no cheap production at all.

To round off this piece of writing on a joyful note, I'd like to recommend a couple of gems from David Tao:

    1. Watch his concert video "Soul Power". If this isn't a great work of art, I don't know what is.

    2. Have a good listen to his first few albums, especially the first three. You won't be disappointed.

    3. Watch a documentary called “11号产房”。You will understand David better as a great artist and genuine soul.

    4. Check out his videos on Bilibili(ID:陶喆的音乐产房) where he talks about music productions.
